If you want to bring some fine craftsmanship and beauty to your games, these dice are for you! Ebony is a beautiful, heavy, and rare wood that I feel honored to work with in some capacity. The wood has been prized for thousands of years by artisans and instrument makers for its dark black color, hardness, and tight grains which hold intricate details. Ebony polishes itself from the dense oils within the grains, and it’s so heavy that it’s one of the only woods that actually sinks in water.

I think the black of Ebony wood is beautifully complimented by gold, so I’ve been researching and perfecting gilding techniques which could fill in the fine shapes and edges of the dots, and I finally feel happy with the results here.

Note that ebony does however have a downside - a number of species of ebony are linked to unethical logging practices, and is therefore restricted from export from certain geographies. For this reason I’ve spent the year learning about how I might be able to ethically use the offcuts of FSC-certified Ebony which are too small to be used by instrument makers. Working with these fragments can be a challenge, requiring the development of custom jigs and methods to make these dice from pieces which might otherwise be discarded — I feel good about offering these as a result!
