These boxes are made from Maple growing in special conditions which alter the otherwise straight grains of the wood, leading to iridescent ripples called “Figure” or “Quilting.” Figured Maple is also called “Fiddleback” Maple as Luthiers prize the wood for its resonant qualities. Maple is normally a very light wood, almost white in appearance, which hides this iridescent growth pattern. When dyed, the iridescent ripples suddenly pop spectacularly!
This finishing process is labor intensive, with many stages of dying, sanding, and sealing. It’s more art than science as every piece of wood is different and the dye is applied in multiple stages with sanding and tuning in-between. For these reasons each box is completely unique.
